The 5th Annual Crunchies Awards

The Crunchies awards will be held on January 31, 2012 at the Louise M. Davis Symphony Hall in San Francisco. The event will award the best start ups & products of 2011. Last year Twitter won the best overall category award and Quora won the best new startup award. The strongest contenders in the overall category this year includes Airbnb, Dropbox and Square whereas in the best startups category includes Pinterest, Turntable.fm, Nest, Codeacademy, Getaround, and Warby Parker.

Airbnb
Airbnb.com is a global network of accommodations offered by locals. It's more fun and very cheap, especially in big cities like New York, San Francisco, Paris. The booking process is very easy; you search a property, enter the dates, message the host with any questions through the onsite messaging system, book it and pack your bags.




Dropbox
Dropbox is a free cloud computing service that lets you bring your photos, docs, and videos anywhere and share them easily. Never email yourself a file again! It's a free application and compatible for Windows, Mac, Linux and Mobile








Square
Square a new start up has introduced an iPhone credit card reader and application for both iPhone and Android. They offer 2.7% per swipe for all cards as a fixed simple rate. It's great for small & medium size businesses.

Pinterest
Pinterest is a virtual Pinboard that lets you organize and share all the beautiful things you find on the web. People use pinboards to plan their weddings, decorate their homes, and organize their favorite recipes. Best of all, you can browse pinboards created by other people. Browsing pinboards is a fun way to discover new things and get inspiration from people who share your interests.





Turntable.fm
turntable connects you and your friends in a real time music listening experience. Play music together for free on the internet or your iPhone. It's still only accessible to the United States due to licensing constraints but will be available for everyone soon.

Nest is a learning thermostat that programs itself around your life-not the other way around. It helps you watch your energy use, you can access Nest online or on the go on your mobile. It's a cool thermostat that is accessible from wherever you are, saves you money and keeps you comfortable.


Codeacademy
Codeacademy is the easiest way to learn how to code. It's interactive, fun, and you can do it with your friends. You can learn Javascript in a few minutes and the best thing is that it's free!

Getaround
Getaround is a social car sharing site. You can rent cars by the hour from people around you or earn cash using your car. They enable car owners to safely rent out their underutilized cars to a community of trusted drivers who are in need of a car. You can rent one by the hour using the Getaround website or iPhone app.






Warby Parker
Warby Parker sells stylish prescription eyeglasses online and it is well known for its Home-Try On Program  by which you can choose 5 eyeglasses to try on at home at no charge. Nether less, its Virtual Try- On application allows you to upload a photo from your computer or webcam and try on their frames right on you screen- the best part of it, is that you can share it with your friends and post it on Warby Parker's facebook fan page for opinions.
